I bought this pack because the other backpacking pack I had was almost twice this size. We were going to travel fast and light down into the Grand Canyon via the Bill Hall trail leaving the North Rim and returning in a loop. We spent 4 days and 3 nights out and this pack took every kind of abuse I could muster and kept on plugging along. Though a bit small to fit everything inside, the comfort it afforded my 6′ 2″ frame was amazing. I didn’t even have to adjust it much at all straight from the wrapping and onto my back. I had to strap my tent to the bottom of the pack and some water in the outside pockets (before we cached them on the way down). I thought it might be nice to have some tie down loops on the top pocket of the pack in case I would like to strap something small up there or even a solar charger, but there were not any available. The hip belt was very comfortable and the vent flow up the middle of the back was effective. The buckles around the pack are tiny and made me nervous, but I never had a problem with them. I didn’t use the water bladder feature because those things always often leak and I didn’t want to have to deal with wet clothes or sleeping bag that far away from home! I really did buy this pack for more of a winter hut to hut skiing here in Colorado, but thought I would use it on this Grand Canyon trip–I think a slightly bigger pack (maybe a 75 L would be more appropriate), but I could still strap some more things to the outside if needed. If you’ve ever been down there though, you will know that those rocks you have to scramble up and around could do some pretty good damage to something not protected inside a pack. I can’t wait to use this thing again!

Great bang for your buck

I received the mountainsmith lookout 50 in a timely manner from the mountainsmith company. I have to say it’s one of the best packs I’ve ever purchased. From being a Boy Scout to a climber and hunter and fisherman, I have to say this bag is nice. It’s made of light material and the seams really are durable. Plenty of space for up to five days for me but I am not an over packer. It fits amazing after he proper adjusting and im 6’1 and 220 and built muscular. The way the pack holds to your body is the seller for me.

Excited to put it to the test.

I have not had a chance to take this pack out for the long haul test (winter). However I have tested it on local short trips and what I’ve learned is that it is very comfortable and has enough space for my needs which typically includes about 40-50 lbs. of gear that usually trek back 6-10 miles.

It’s a great backback for the price

It’s a great backback for the price, i used it recently in a 3 day hiking trip and has a good weight distribution and good space, the design is cool, a little strap crazy, my only real complain would be the overall weight of the pack by itself, it’s a little too heavy, could be less heavy

Great bag, great quality, love it.

This bag is great quality and well built in the USA. Can’t beat it for a low price (I got it for $110). Not the highest end bag but as a regular backpacker I approve. Fits me great, but it’s not very adjustable (I’m 5’10)

What a great deal on this pack

The backpack has all the space I was looking for and enough compartment to handle all of my things. Once I packed everything and carried the backpack the weight was balance. Very happy with this backpack.
