I like it, I think I am going to enjoy it a lot- but it takes a little practice to set it up solo.

First off- I’m putting this on a 2014 Dodge 1500 with the 6’4″ box.

Best decision I made this year!

I bought this truck tent above all the others I had seen or done research on because it looked much more durable than the other flimsy parachute material ones we had seen before. We had planned a week long camping trip to Oregon Coast over the summer and needed extra room for those who couldn’t fit into our trailer. We have a 2005 Toyota Tundra with a 6 ft bed. The tent fit PERFECTLY!! It was so easy to put up each night and take down in the morning. Not a lot of extra parts to lose, so it keeps together well. I was so impressed with the way it kept cool inside when it was warm out due to the window vents and strong canvas walls. It withstood strong winds and rain without any issues and was relatively quiet inside as well. My brother who is pretty tall, could stand up comfortably in the middle and we were able to put 2 sleeping cots side by side in the back or just keep one cot and a camping table, lamp and baggage. I loved the fact that it has the same material as the sleeping cot we still own from my uncles time in the Korean war and will withstand the test of time. I expect in a few years with heavy use, we may lose a seam or two, but those are much more easily repaired with any sewing machine, where other tents would be thrown away and replaced. Worth every dime….thanks Kodiak!

Kodiak Canvas Tent – Easy Setup

This is an excellent tent and I do not believe there are any other truck tents quite as good for strength and durability as is found in a canvas tent. I am a believer in canvas having spent a career in the military and have spent a lot of time in tents and having lived in a canvas tent for as long as one year at the time. Military tents are of course heavier but canvas make great tents for longer life and structurally more sound. Let me be clear about the setup. I agree with the many reviews that state the difficulty of trying to set the tent up using only one person. I am both a hunter, fisherman and an avid RVer. I am retired and I purchased this tent to be used primarily in the late fall and winter months when weather permitting here in Maryland. I plan to use primarily for one or two overnighters when hunting or fishing at that time of the year. While my spouse loves RVing and fishing in summer and early fall during the colder months I am away by myself. Therefore, the need to be able to set the tent up without help. I have now set the tent up by myself for a total of 6 times. I must admit that the first four times were extremely difficult because as soon as I would get the poles mounted on top of the hooks or pins on the rail and then try and place the tent across them they would start falling over and it was simply a nightmare. The first time it took me perhaps an hour and a half and the following 3 times at least an hour. It was just a plain hassle to get the tent aligned and stable on the poles without a second pair of hands. So I agree with the many reviews that say it is extremely difficult for one person, not that it cannot be done but it is difficult and takes a lot of time. I have now solved this fundamental problem with the setup and the 5th and 6th time it was possible to set the tent up completely in just over 20 minutes without rush. I believe the problem for one person lies in stabilizing the primary three rail poles across the truck for the tent and for this reason I decided to use two pressure treated 2×4’s and drill three 1/2″ diameter holes in each 2×4 to be able to insert the poles. I mounted a 1 1/2″ PVC pipe across the length of each of the treated 2×4″s for extra stability. In the PVC pipe I drilled a 3/4″ hole in line with 1/2″ hole in the 2×4. The reason the hole in the PVC is larger is because the pole begins to curve as it come up and across the truck bed. This make a very rigid structure on which you can simply place the tent across and not have the poles falling over or coming loose and scratching the truck finish or causing a tear in the canvas. I simply place tent across the three primary poles, line it up, hop down from the truck bed, raise the tailgate and insert the tent around the tailgate, insert the truck cab canopy rail in place, insert the tailgate canopy rail across the tailgate, tighten the straps around the truck and I am done. This works very well because the primary poles have been stabilized and allows an easy setup. This can be easily set up in very low light such as what you have during late evening when coming back from a day of fishing, hunting or anything else. The bottom line is it requires only one person and no hassle. As you can see from the photos I did use the metal rail and bolted to the top of the 2×4 because I have them and they eliminate having to dent the 2×4 but this is not necessary. It just that over time you would have a lot of dents in the 2×4 from each set up. Mounting the C-clamps on the metal surface eliminates this from happening. Forgot to mention I replaced the C-clamps that came with tent to larger ones which are 3″ which are necessary because of the 2×4 used as rails. A word about weather. Here in Maryland we have had rain and intermittent rain for some two weeks during the latter part of December so the 6th time I put the tent up it stayed up for two days in the rain. It does not leak. I am truly impressed with quality and with the long bed truck you have the equivalent of ten feet of space which makes it more than ample for at least two people. A final word is the new modified railing is still one piece because the 2×4, PVC pipe and the metal rail are all bolted together making them always ready to set up. There are probably other ideas about how to make it a one person set up but this does work well and makes the process simple. The tent fabric is very strong and appears to be well stitched for pulling around the poles and especially for the cab and tailgate canopies. I am impressed.

The tent is incredibly easy to use. We absolutely love the tent. However, everywhere we have it set up, people are constantly asking about it. We have had many people take pictures. I’ve even given a few tours to people asking for details. It is awesome to have. We have a toolbox at the front of the bed and have a full size air mattress that fits perfectly between the wheel wells. We stay perfectly comfortable inside. We have yet to get rained on. When that finally happens, I’ll add those details to my review.

Great buy you won’t be disappointed in purchase (even though it is a little bit more in price).

I can’t express enough how cool this product is. I wanted to get something that would work for the back of my truck as a tent and I didn’t think anything would be out there. Boy was I wrong. When browsing around I saw this product which was a tad more expensive then some of the more classic plastic like tents but I couldn’t be happier. I haven’t had a chance to use this product camping yet but I have set it up quite a few times for practice. Based on my initial tests the product is excellent. It fits really well over the box of the vehicle with the end closest to the cab having a flexible and adjustable end (probably for the numerous box sizes available on trucks), numerous tie downs and straps that allows for the product to stay secured onto the box (including 3 lightweight but durable steel poles for center support) and as far as I can tell is extremely durable and breathable. I would suggest this product to anyone looking for something that stands out as well as an inexpensive way to enjoy camping. When fully erect the tent allows for about 5 ft of clearance on the inside which comfortably allows for moveable room within the tent as well as the ability to place cots, storage, etc within the tent.

Glad I found this!!

I’ve had this tent for 2 years. Not had one bit of trouble with it. Last year I used it April thru Oct on a 5000 mile trip and year before that a 6000 mile trip. It stands up to the weather great!! Hasn’t leaked once! I’ve never had a tent satisfy me like this ones does. The fact it is up off the ground attracted me to it as I’m getting on in years and don’t like the small tent you put on the ground. I have a light weight aluminum ladder to help me in and out of the tent. Works Great!! I make a bed that is off the floor inside with my camping box as a table to sit coffee pot, radio and lamp. I’m 6’1″ and can get around inside very well. I don’t have any trouble setting it up by myself. 20 minutes at the most for me. Tear down is very easy! Fits back in the bag, imagine that!! I’m getting ready to spend the rest of spring and entire summer and early fall camping out in it. Can hardly wait to get started. This tent really deserves a 5 star rating with me. Thanks Kodiak!!

I bought this for opening Quail season in Arizona (10/4/13). I did set it up at home, as the directions recommend. Directions were just fine, and yes you may need to slide the rail closer to the cab or closer to the tailgate depending on actual size of your bed.

Excellent Overall Product

I have a 2013 F150 Supercrew (5.5 bed) and the tent fits pretty well, you just need to spend an hour or maybe more the first time seeing how to adjust it for your truck as it fits 5.5 to 6.5 beds. The 9 inch measurement to the rail might need adjusting, the tent needs placing a bit more toward the cab with a 5.5 bed (tuck more fabric then you think you want between the bed and rear window).

Like others have said…. Make sure that you set this up at home before you need it. The first time took about 45 minutes. I left it up in the driveway for a couple of days then I took it down and set it right back up and it only took about 10 mintues. When we where out at the camp site, it only took about 10 minutes to set up again because we left the braces on the top of the bed rails. Love this tent. We had plenty of room even with an air mattress and tons of blankets. This is going to last a long time. One thing that I liked was there was plenty of air flow with the windows down. Since the windows had the screens, we had 0 bugs inside with us. Takes about 5 minutes to take down. The only thing that I would like would be another zipper window on top so that we could look at the stars while laying down… All in all it was a great investment.

Amazing tent!!

This is a very durable tent. Works amazing for what we needed, a dry comfortable place to sleep when atv trail riding. We have a 2014 ford f150 with 5 foot box including a truxedo. This tent still works. You will need to be patient the first couple times setting this up to get the feel for how it goes together as most other reviews state too. We purchased all new C clamps and some small regular clamps to cinch up extra canvas since we made adjustments for short box. Everything fits nicely and snug, no mosquitos could get in as long as door stayed shut. We built a platform out of plywood to lay over wheel wells, which makes a po erect fit for a queen size mattress. Highly recommend the lucid 4 inch gel memory foam mattress which folds up into a small couch. Husband and I are bigger people and sleep very comfortably on this set up.
