Rucksacks/backpacks are going to be a subjective thing and what one person likes another one might not like. If you want a great extended trip hiking backpack (at least compared to the super common “3 day assault packs that are no larger than a standard backpack) in military styling with the modularity of PALS/MOLLE webbing, this is a great pack at a reasonable price. You can easily loop some webbing through the PALS loops underneath the bottom of the pack to hold a sleeping pad, packed tent, or other large sack. Compression straps all over it allow you to compress your load for stability. The color is awesome if you like coyote brown gear like I do. It’s got loads of room (4000 cubic inches or 66 liters) and can be shrunk down by removing the top pouch/cover. Included raincover is awesome and saves you the trouble of buying one. Some people complain about the lack of compartmentalization for things like your sleeping bag in the main compartment, but it’s not a big deal to me since you can access the bag from the large zipper opening in the rear without having to pull everything out from the top. Top notch stitching and materials and should hold up extremely well to hard use while being reasonably light for a military style backpack.

I purchased this bag in 2011 while deployed.I had well over 100 lbs in this bag in Afghanistan at least 300 days out of 365 and I still use it today… The only things that have gone wrong are the handle near the base of the pck ripped (163 lbs load while being tossed) and I crushed a waist belt clip… Other than that it has been shot burnt thaken schapnel and been thrown all over…its been all over the world now and still hangs in there…. hell of a pack…

Okay folks, so just to get a few things out there, I spent ten years, homeless. A third of my life. And I am very familiar with Kelty products, this one here is very similar to my old Kelty Coyote 4900, though indeed smaller. Which is exactly what I was looking for. An ok minimalist pack. But let’s get right off onto pros and cons

Great ruck/backpack

This ruck is amazing, not oversized but big enough to carry a decent amount of gear, comfortably. Durability is great, this is the second Kelty ruck I’ve owned (I have the big brother as well), and both hold up to large amounts of weight. I haven’t put the pack through a lot of abuse, so I can’t attest to how well it will hold up under extreme conditions, but it has taken what I’ve thrown at it thus far. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a medium ruck/backpack for hiking or military use.

This pack is awesome. I initially looked at this pack for a number of reasons – the capacity, the overall look, and the PALs webbing. There are two things I think would help potential buyers: I got this pack in Coyote Brown and it is difficult to find quality MOLLE pouches in this color (I ended up getting a few from Eberlestock in Ranger Green and they don’t match but do off-set the coloring in a way that I find appealing). Also, I have yet to find more than two video reviews of this pack and I have not been able to find any that tell me how to adjust the frame in any but a very general way. Along with that, I cannot seem to find a way to remove the aluminum stays and had to bend them for about two hours to fit the contour of my back while they were still in the pack. These obstacles are easily overcome if you take the pack to an outdoors store and have them fit it for you, or if you happen to be very familiar yourself with internal frame backpacks. Overall, this pack is exactly as I imagined it, after doing the research I did before I bought it. It fits an incredible amount of stuff, although I wouldn’t use it for trips over a week in winter or for ice climbing as I would need a bigger pack for those types of trips.

Great internal-frame backpack with M.O.L.L.E.

At the time of this review, I have had this pack for about two years and am happy with my purchase. I would recommend this to a friend. A few of my favorite features in no particular order:

Great, Great, Great, I spent along time looking up and trying out backpacks, and clocked a few thousand miles hitchhiking and camping before buying this, and I am very happy to say this has and does everything I need (also, the CamelBak 90652 Bottle Pouch, Coyote, is a great add on to the sides) Further, a few cheap ($1/$2) simple nylon webbing strap with cinches on the end go along way with this pack, I carried a 12’x10′ tarp folded on the bottom with no problem. Also, if you’re a slim guy, it’s hella streamline and doesn’t bulge like alotta packs.
