Expensive but well thought out design for a hiker/traveler’s backpack

I just got back from a trip where I used this bag as my personal item carry-on in addition to my other main carry-on suitcase. This bag is the perfect size! It fits all of my gear and slides nicely under the seat in front of you on most commercial aircraft. We flew on smaller regional jets and propeller planes and I did not have a problem fitting it under the seat. It does stick out a bit but is under far enough to not draw attention from the flight attendants. Fully packed it does take some maneuvering as it just fits between your seat and the one in front of you. Below is a list of all of the gear I had stuffed in this thing.

I’ve been using this bag for the better part of two months now, and it is a fantastic bag. The most likely reason to consider the bag is because of the aluminum frame. The frame helps the bag to maintain it’s structure, which also helps to keep things tidy inside and put the weight where it should be, on your hips. Additionally, the frame allows Kata to use a mesh stretched across the frame so that there’s nothing between you and the bag except this mesh and a whole lot of air. It sure beats a traditional backplate, and is far more comfortable in hot humid days. I’ve carried this for long periods of time both in urban environments and out in the wooded areas – it’s top notch and comfortable.

Great one, but go for darker color as it gets dirty easily

Kata UL 111 MiniBee

After searching through many backpacks, I decided to go with the 111 instead of the UL 222, which I found out was way bigger than the pictures. However, I noticed until I received it that the waistband is thin and not like that of the 222, which makes it feel like it’s not really doing anything by being there. I can’t stand the straps dangling from all sides, but I will deal with it because I really like the space inside the backpack. I yet have to take it out for a long trip. I’m getting the feeling this doesn’t fit under an airplane seat so it’s either the backpack with all my gear on my vacation, or my roll on bag with all the other personal things I need to take on my trip. Decisions, decisions, decisions.

Great

Obviously expensive, but you are getting the highest quality. Another comparable option is the Petrol DSLR line. Neither is for people who haul around a duffle bag full of lenses.

If you can find one (Manfrotto bought Kata), buy it. It’s a bit pricey but so well-designed and light that comparative to other bags’ prices it’s worth it.
